SUSTAINABILITYOur commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices extends from our farmers and growers to how we reduce, reuse and recycle. We support organic farmers whenever possible including Steve Rogers from Singing Pig Farm, Gene Thiel from Prairie Creek Farms, Plants Beautiful, Viridian Farms, Gathering Together Farms, Cascade Organics, and others. Southpark’s management team, green team and staff are committed to doing business responsibly. We compost all food waste, recycle cooking oil and avoid bringing in unnecessary packaging. We recycle cardboard, cans, glass and paper; use compostable trash can liners and have transitioned from plastic items to straws made from corn, containers made from sugar and bar picks made from recycled wood. Our menus, comment cards and letterhead are made from post consumer use or recycled paper. In honor of The Wetlands Conservancy’s 30th anniversary, and American Wetlands Month in May, Southpark is promoting an “Aqua Plate Special” menu item, featuring seafood whose habitat is dependent upon the health of Oregon’s estuaries. For each dish, a portion of proceeds will be donated to The Wetlands Conservancy; an Oregon non-profit group dedicated to permanently protecting and conserving this vital habitat. Located in the Southpark Garage at SW 9th Ave. and Taylor St., the charging station is jump-starting infrastructure efforts to support Oregon’s electric vehicle movement. “Electric vehicles have hit home in Portland and we support and applaud these efforts,” says Southpark General Manager Karin Devencenzi. “We feel the timing is right to begin accommodating the growing demand for electric vehicle charging stations downtown.” Oregon is emerging as a leader in the electric car movement as Nissan and Mitsubishi have chosen Portland as a major test market for their new line of electric vehicles. In addition, 2010 is ushering in the installation of 12,000 new electric charging stations across four Western states, including Oregon. The infrastructure buildup is due in part to a $100 million grant, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and slated for incentives to build charging infrastructure. Southpark’s eight-vehicle charging station is in the heart of downtown Portland’s shopping, dining and cultural districts and is located kitty-corner from Director Park. “Our new charging station allows electric car owners to free their mind from any ‘range anxiety’ associated with battery usage, while having access to Portland’s city center,” said Devencenzi. In addition to installing the new charging stations, Southpark Seafood Grill & Wine Bar engages in stringent eco-practices such as following the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program, sourcing ingredients from local and sustainable farms, as well as composting and recycling.
